If you’ve been wondering whether labiaplasty could help you, you’re not alone. Women seek advice about their labial anatomy for many different and legitimate reasons — from physical discomfort to changes after childbirth or simply wanting to feel more confident in their body.

I’ve written this guide to explain the most common considerations women have when starting to explore labiaplasty, and how to determine if they’re ready to take the next step with a consultation.

First: It’s Completely Normal for Labia to Vary

Labia come in many shapes, sizes, and asymmetries. There is no single “normal” appearance.

For many women, longer or uneven labia cause no issues at all.

However, some women experience:

  • physical discomfort
  • irritation during exercise
  • self-consciousness about appearance
  • anatomical changes following childbirth or ageing

When these concerns begin to affect comfort or quality of life, women may start exploring whether labiaplasty could help.

Questions That May Help You Decide

Women considering labiaplasty often ask themselves questions such as:

  • Do my labia cause discomfort during exercise or daily activities, like gymwork, cycling, walking or running?
  • Do I experience irritation or rubbing from clothing, especially tight-fitting garments?
  • Has the appearance of my labia changed after childbirth or during the menopause?
  • Do I feel self-conscious or uncomfortable because of the size or shape of my labia?
  • Would improving these concerns help my confidence or quality of life?

If the answer to one or more of these is yes, we suggest you make an appointment with a specialist. At The Women’s Clinic, you will be seen by one of our all-female team (most likely either myself or Amanda Pook) in our very private, friendly and discrete clinic at West Regent Street, Glasgow. We are great listeners and ask you to be candid during your consultation.

What Happens During a Labiaplasty Consultation?

A consultation at The Women’s Clinic typically includes:

  • a discussion about your concerns and goals
  • a medical assessment with an experienced gynaecological surgeon
  • explanation of the different procedures we can offer
  • If you want, a more in-depth explanation of the labiaplasty surgery procedure with our advanced CO2RE Intima laser
  • An overview of typical treatment costs and finance options
  • discussion of recovery and outcomes

“Our new premises on Glasgow’s West Regent Street is a private and welcoming clinic environment for our female patients. When you visit us, we will ensure you feel heard, understood, welcomed and reassured.”Amanda Pook, Laser Aesthetician and founder of The Women’s Clinic

Modern Advances in Labiaplasty Surgery

At our clinic, procedures are performed using the advanced CO2RE Intima laser, which allows extremely precise tissue reshaping while minimising trauma to surrounding tissue. We are one of only a handful of clinics in the UK equipped with this unique laser, which means no need for traditional scalpel or incisional surgery to the labia.

The benefits of laser labiaplasty surgery:

  • greater surgical precision
  • reduced bleeding
  • quicker healing compared with traditional ‘scalpel’ methods

The Most Important Thing to Remember

Considering a labiaplasty does not mean something is “wrong” with your body.

Many women simply want:

  • improved comfort
  • relief from irritation
  • increased confidence

Speaking with a qualified specialist can help you understand your options and decide what feels right for you.

“Many women worry their concerns are purely cosmetic, but we often see patients whose labial anatomy causes real physical discomfort during exercise or daily activities.” – Dr Hala Elgmati, Consultant Gynaecological Surgeon, The Women’s Clinic

Frequently Asked Questions

Is it normal to have uneven labia?

Yes. It is very common for the labia minora to vary in size or shape, and many women have some degree of natural asymmetry. Uneven or larger labia are usually completely normal, although some women experience physical discomfort or self-consciousness that leads them to explore labiaplasty.

Does labiaplasty affect sensation?

When performed by an experienced surgeon, labiaplasty is designed to reshape the labia without affecting the structures responsible for sexual sensation. The goal is to preserve sensitivity while improving comfort and appearance. During consultation, our consultant surgeon will explain how our laser reshaping approach helps minimise risks to sensation.

What age can you have labiaplasty?

Labiaplasty is typically considered only once the labia have fully developed, which usually occurs after the age of 18. In some medical situations it may be performed earlier, we recommend waiting until adulthood so anatomy has stabilised and your decision is fully informed.

How long does recovery take?

Initial healing usually takes around one to two weeks, during which swelling and mild discomfort gradually settle. Most patients can return to normal daily activities relatively quickly, although exercise, cycling, and sexual activity are typically avoided for around four to six weeks to allow complete healing. We provide all patients with an aftercare kit, to promote rapid healing and avoid any risk of infection.
