Laser Labiaplasty with CO2RE® surgical device

INTRODUCTION

Laser Surgery Labiaplasty

Deciding on a cosmetic surgical labiaplasty procedure to reshape the appearance of their labia is a highly personal and private decision for any woman. And although labiaplasty is often portrayed as a purely cosmetic procedure, the vast majority of patients who come to the Women’s Clinic for a labiaplasty actually do so for medical reasons.

Labia come in all sorts of shapes and sizes, and while none are “wrong,” naturally-occurring long labia can still often be a source of physical discomfort, or even pain. This can occur in a variety of situations including sport, exercise, horse or bike riding, sex, or even just wearing relatively tight clothing.

Women with longer labia can find that they experience rubbing or chafing in such situations. Longer labia can sometimes also interfere with basic functions, such as urinating – causing discomfort, embarrassment and issues of hygiene. These are quality of life issues, and it’s these issues which laser labiaplasty can significantly assist with.

At the Women’s Clinic, we are highly empathetic to patients approaching us to discuss a laser labiaplasty and ensure they feel comfortable and confident in discussing this highly intimate procedure.

Historically most women who discussed labial reduction with their GP found the treatment was unavailable from the NHS and this remains true today. But greater awareness of the procedure and wider availability from private cosmetic clinics have made Laser Labiaplasty a highly popular and transformative treatment for women who may have suffered labial pain and discomfort for many years.

Labiaplasty, also known as Labial Reduction, is a routine non-gynecological procedure, which thousands of women get done every year and which can be carried out surgically, or (as at The Women’s Clinic) non-surgically, using a specialist laser

We are one of only a few UK clinics with Candela’s CO2RE Intima Laser, and our experienced surgeons, Hala and Elania, have completed specialist training by Candela Medical. This training enables them to perform intimate treatments, such as Labial reductions and reshaping, with great precision and under local anaesthetic. We see patients at our advanced clinics conveniently located in Glasgow and Dublin city centres.

The Benefits of Labial Reductions

The primary benefit of labial reduction is in the elimination of soreness or discomfort caused as a result of having long labia in certain situations. Relieving the body of the effects of this friction helps to prevent redness, irritation and pain. And, in turn, this frees women up to more fully experience clothing or activities which might otherwise be spoiled, or even made impossible to enjoy.

In addition, for cultural and societal reasons, women have often been made to feel uncomfortable about how their labia naturally look. And while there is no single “correct” appearance for labia, women do still sometimes wish to change the shape of this part of their body in order to feel more confident. Labial reduction can help with this too, although it should not be considered a replacement for fully dealing with issues such as body dysmorphia, and should never be undertaken as a result of pressure from anyone else.

About Labial Reduction Surgery

Labial Reduction Surgery is often considered as a response to life-changing events, such as vaginal childbirth or perimenopause. Both can result in changes to labial tissue, leaving labia differently-shaped than before, more sensitive and more prone to irritation.

Labiaplasty is not usually available through the NHS, except in rare cases such as trauma, congenital abnormality, or cancer-related reconstruction, where funding may be approved.

Laser surgery is usually performed on an out-patient basis using local anaesthetic. Neither the clitoris nor the urethra is affected when the labia is made smaller. This is not a gynaecological procedure and does not affect childbirth. The labia will be trimmed to sit comfortably inside the Labia Majora (outer lips) and have a natural shape. The retention of all normal sensation is paramount. Sutures (stitches) are dissolvable and will not require removal, a post-op check up will be booked for six week after your Laser surgery.

The benefits of Laser Labiaplasty

The use of the CO2RE® Intima Laser for labial reduction surgery decreases swelling, bruising, and pain, in comparison to regular surgery, and therefore speeds up the recovery process.

Our Practitioners are extensively trained in laser technology and in using a laser to remove the excessive tissue, using a technique called Labia Trimming. Because the laser seals the blood vessels as it cuts, the amount of bleeding is very minimal and therefore the bruising, pain, infection and swelling are also decreased.

Risks and Complications

All surgeries come with some level of risk, such as inflammation and infection, however, this is minimised with CO2RE® Intima laser labiaplasty as there is little to no blood loss, swelling is minimised and the healing process is easier to manage.

A full homecare kit is supplied to aid in your post-op care and, if you have any issues or concerns, you can contact out friendly team for advice and support.

A Time to Heal

After the surgery you may feel a little sore for a couple of days, but both the swelling and discomfort will diminish within the first week. Compression of the affected area can also help to relieve swelling or bruising.

You will need to wear an absorbent pad for the first week after the procedure, and should stick to gentle activities initially. You should wait to resume sexual activity and strenuous activity for six weeks.

The body will continue to heal itself in the months to come and you will notice improvements throughout the first few months. Any scarring which may have been caused should be almost invisible by 6 months after your procedure.

Post Care

Please note we will supply you with a post care home care kit after surgery.

"My needs and expectations have been met fully" "Having researched several clinics, and communicating to a few shortlisted clinics, The Women Clinic really stood out to me. Amanda; The clinic owner contacted me and gave me in-depth information and advice about the (very intimate) procedure I was wanting. Her advice and support throughout the whole process were second to none. The Practitioner who carried out the procedure was also extremely supportive and professional. I felt cared for and respected from first communication to many days post-op (and continuing). I was comfortable, supported and well informed throughout each stage on the day of my surgery. Amanda was available at any time for any complications or concerns post-op (which I didn't have). I am now 1-week post-op. Amanda has gone above and beyond their duty of care to check in with me regularly. I am over the moon with the results. My needs and expectations have been met fully, and although the final results won't be evident until post-surgical healing time has passed I am 100% more confident and satisfied with the results already. I cannot recommend this clinic enough. Thank you, Amanda, keep up the good work!"

Amie

"I would like to thank you for allowing me the opportunity to trial the Co2re Intima. The procedure was explained to me thoroughly and I had complete confidence in you both, and the procedure, as I have known Amanda for many years and that she would never recommend or use a product that you did not totally believe in yourself. During the procedure I could feel a slight discomfort but no pain, I felt a slight tingling sensation for 20-30 minutes after the procedure. I received excellent after care instruction and really appreciated your telephone calls afterwards. I know that a lot of ladies would be embarrassed to discuss symptoms such as lax vaginal walls and some urinary symptoms which present particularly following childbirth but you made me feel so at ease. This is an absolute must for any lady out there who is having concerns re vaginal laxity, or urinary symptoms. I have read other reviews also and they are so positive, at last there is a treatment that can help with rather than just feeling as though we have to accept such things. I am delighted with this treatment and will have no hesitation in recommending it and Amanda. Thank you once again. "

“I have felt uncomfortable talking about labiaplasty for many years of my life until I heard about this all female clinic, which I went on to enquire about. Amanda made me feel right at ease with the consultation and procedure and already I’m feeling my life will be filled with a lot more confidence within myself. Highly recommend & thank you to both of you!”

Tallulah Graham

"I could not recommend this treatment highly enough. It was so easy to do and painfree, and has no downtime at all. Looking forward to being able to go jogging again."

Lisa, 52, Glasgow

Before menopause for 25 or more years we had a wonderful personal intimate life and then at 53 everything changed, and I was shocked at the change, we had gone to specialists and they couldn’t help us. So the issues that concerned us such as very dry, uncomfortable and painful that we gave up completely, and then my husband read an article about the Intima treatment and so we came for a consultation, I have had three treatments so far, and now my genuine improvements are no pain with intercourses and now no issues with dryness and my husband can feel a huge change in how I feel and we are now happily having the intimate relationship we enjoyed before menopause.

Maureen, 54

"The Womens Clinic made me feel at ease straight away when discussing the labiaplasty procedure. When I arrived at the clinic I felt looked after by Amanda and everything was fully explained to me. I am very happy with the result of the procedure and the clinic always kept in touch with me pre and post procedure. My confidence has improved significantly and I would recommend anyone to have the procedure done with this clinic!"

MORE INFORMATION

Questions you may have about Laser Labiaplasty

Is Laser Labiaplasty safe?

The laser procedure is much safer than usual general surgery which requires general anaesthetic and a hospital stay.

As with all surgery, laser labiaplasty does come with some risks – these include swelling, bruising, scarring, or altered sensation. When carried out by an experienced gynaecological surgeon however, with thorough advance consultation, using careful technique, and appropriate aftercare, the risks are significantly reduced.

Is Labiaplasty a cosmetic or medical procedure?

Although Labiaplasty is often portrayed as a purely cosmetic procedure, in fact the vast majority of patients at The Women’s Clinic have the laser surgery for medical reasons.

Physical discomfort as a result of long labia is most often the result of excessive friction between body and clothing. This friction can cause chafing, irritation and pain, and can often manifest as a result of physical activities such as sport, exercise, and even sex.

These issues can occur for any women, and in many cases they follow vaginal childbirth (which can cause stretching, asymmetry or elongated tissue) or perimenopause (during which hormonal changes can lead to a reduction in collagen and elasticity of the tissue).

Whatever the cause, longer labia occur naturally among many women, and are perfectly normal. They can however lead to discomfort or pain, which is why laser labiaplasty can provide a medically warranted solution.

At The Women’s Clinic, consultations are symptom-led. We assess whether labial tissue is contributing to functional discomfort and discuss appropriate treatment options based on clinical findings, rather than aesthetic ideals.

Can I get Laser Labiaplasty on the NHS?

Labiaplasty procedures are not routinely available via the National Health Service, and funding is usually only available in certain medically-specific and exceptional circumstances. These include cases of trauma, congenital abnormality, or cancer-related reconstruction.

Women are usually advised to try more conservative measures first, such as changes in clothing, the use of emollient moisturising treatments and avoiding harsh soap or washing materials to reduce the likelihood of irritation.

While those approaches can bring positive results, they are not sufficient to help every women in every case. The Laser Labiaplasty procedure offers an alternate approach which may provide the relief desired.

What are the side effects of Surgical Laser Labiaplasty?

Some of the possible side effects that patients report after having a laser labiaplasty include:

  • Some pain, discomfort & swelling for up to 6 weeks
  • Initially pain on passing urine (rarely)
  • Bruising for up to 1 week
  • Not uncommonly wounds oozing fluid
  • Slight risk of infection and wound opening
  • Some itching and irritation from stitches
Will having Laser Labiaplasty affect sensation?

No, sensation will not be affected, and once you have recovered from your Labiaplasty procedure, you should find that feeling and sensation are the same as before.

What is the recovery time after Laser Labiaplasty?

The recovery time after Laser Surgery is much faster and the risk of problems or complications significantly lower in comparison with a standard general anaesthetic surgical procedure.

You should feel more or less back to normal within 2-4 weeks and can resume sexual intercourse and exercise after 6 weeks. A moderate degree of pain and swelling normally lasts for the first week and is significantly reduced before the end of the first week.

Here is what can you expect following the Laser Surgical procedure:

What can I expect after Laser Labiaplasty

You will experience swelling and discomfort in the area shortly after the treatment for a few weeks.

You will be given a Home Care kit with sterile dressings, pain relief and full instructions, and a special sensitive antiseptic spray to apply to the area when required plus full post treatment advice before you leave the clinic.

You will be comfortable to leave the clinic, although we suggest you do not drive for a few days. You will also be able to pass urine without any problem.

When will I see the effects of Laser Labiaplasty?

You should see an immediate and permanent effect, as soon as the swelling goes down.

However, initially there will be distortion and sensitivity during the healing process as the process of tissue contraction will take from 6 weeks up to 6 months.

The sutures to the area are dissolvable so will become invisible within a few weeks, we require you to visit for a post operative checkup at six weeks.

Do I need to change any behaviours after having Laser Labiaplasty?

As there may be some pain or discomfort for up to 6 weeks after laser labiaplasty, patients may have to restricte physical some activities during that period.

We recommend abstinence from sexual intercourse and vigorous sporting activity for 6 weeks after the procedure.

Patients may also find that they need time off work to recover, so it is advisable to check this before committing to the procedure.

How quickly can I resume normal life after my Labiaplasty procedure?

You will normally find that you are comfortable again within a week following the procedure. You’ll be able to carry out normal physical activities such as walking, standing or working from day one – so no need to miss time at work while recovering.

More strenuous physical activity such as running, spin classes and intercourse will take longer to become comfortable again, usually taking approximately six weeks after the procedure. Similarly, you should avoid baths and swimming pools for around four-to-six weeks.

How long will the effects of Laser Labiaplasty last?

The final result will be permanent. The shape of your labia will naturally continue to change with natural ageing, but will remain smaller than before procedure.

Am I a suitable candidate for Laser Labiaplasty? What are the contraindications?

Contraindictions (i.e. where the CO2RE Intima surgical laser is unadvisable) are pregnancy, active inflammation of the vagina and vulva, infection, skin diseases of this area and cancer, where a much more extensive consultation is required for all surgical treatments. To adhere to all elective surgical procedure guidelines a time delay of more than two weeks must be allotted between consultation and surgical procedure.
