We are happy to announce that The Women’s Clinic is the first in the UK to offer the new Urolon clinic procedure, for women suffering from Stress Urinary Incontinence. This revolutionary new procedure has been safely used in Europe for several years and is now available to us.

Unlike other forms of treatment for SUI, that require multiple incontinence treatment clinic visits for minimal improvement, this mostly is a ‘one off’ treatment that can truly be called a walk in and walk out procedure – the patient will walk in with Stress Urinary Incontinence and walk out with the issue completely resolved.

This instant success procedure can remain effective for two or more years, including during sport, normal life, and intimate life.

This specialist filler has the ability to interact with the tissue in the surrounding area and increase the natural collagen levels in the urethra so that, as the filler naturally dissolves, the body itself stimulates the formation of new collagen.

The thought of not having to worry about wearing an incontinence garment again, or the concern if anyone can smell urine, and not feeling clean, is life changing.

The consultation and procedure can be carried out on the same day, the procedure takes no more than 20 minutes and is very comfortable. Leaky bladder after pregnancy – post partum incontinence

Most women who leak urine after childbirth find it soon goes away as the stretched muscles and tissues recover.

However approximately 20% of women find recovery can take months, with some finding their pelvic floor never recovers fully. Discomfort from unwanted urine leakage can become a long-term condition unless treated.

For some postpartum women, Kegel exercises to strengthen pelvic floor muscles will bring relief. Others may consider surgery with vaginal meshes. Urolon bridges the gap between incontinence pads and pelvic floor muscle exercise and surgical treatments.

Urolon treats the cause of SUI by helping to seal the urethra, a mechanism lost as a result of the weakening of connective tissue and muscles required to maintain continence, combined with a gradual loss of collagen within the walls of the urethra.

Urolon is a new class of bulking agent and is referred to as a Bioresorbable Urethral Implant. It is minimally-invasive and injected via a cystoscope for visual confirmation of correct placement.

Urolon is effective after one treatment, with results felt within hours. One treatment of Urolon can prevent unwanted urine leakage for up to 2 years or more.

How widespread is stress urinary incontinence amongst women?

It’s estimated that approximately 200 million people around the world suffer from some form of Urinary Incontinence (the unintentional and accidental loss of urine).

Of these, the majority are adult females, and the most common form is stress incontinence, affecting around 50% of people with UI. Stress incontinence is defined by the International Continence Society as “the complaint of involuntary leakage on effort or exertion, or on sneezing or coughing“. Approximately 1 in 3 women will experience some form of stress incontinence during their lifetime.

Other forms of UI include urge incontinence (approx 20%) and mixed incontinence (approx 30%), but Urolon is designed for and targeted at stress incontinence. Please contact us to discuss treatments for these other types of incontinence.

What are the causes of urinary stress incontinence?

Stress urinary incontinence is known to have a number of causes, including:

Menopause
Pregnancy and childbirth
Hormonal deficiency
Obesity
Smoking
Excess consumption of caffeine and/or alcohol
High-impact activities over years
Chronic coughing or sneezing
The effects of aging, and particularly the natural loss of collagen

Don’t I need surgery to fix urinary stress incontinence?

Surgical interventions to treat stress urinary incontinence, such as the sling procedure, can improve closure of the sphincter or support the bladder neck. However this is invasive surgery and rarely performed.

In recent years new and highly effective non-surgical options have become available, such as Urolon, a revolutionary dermal-filler based treatment, for which The Women’s Clinic is the first UK provider.

Urolon is ideally suited for women with mild to moderate SUI, who do not want a more invasive and risky surgical procedure or who cannot have surgery.

What is Urolon?

Urolon is an innovative bioresorbable product used to treat Stress Urinary Incontinence (SUI) in women. It’s made from microparticles of polycaprolactone (PCL) suspended in a gel carrier – all elements of which are FDA approved.

The treatment, which is injected, stimulates the production of collagen which can replace lost tissue and thus counteract SUI.

The Urolon injection is performed using a cystoscope to accurately see where to inject and can be given with sedation for comfort. Typically, three deposits of Urolon are injected into the wall of the urethra.

What is PCL?

PCL is a well-known medical grade bioresorbable polymer used in many medical devices, such as dermal fillers, drug delivery devices, scaffolds for bone regeneration and resorbable sutures.

What is Bioresorption?

Bioresorption means that the body naturally breaks down and disposes of the materials used and produced by a treatment substance (in this case PCL) over time. This does mean that the effects of the treatment last only for a limited time before requiring a renewal. However it has the safety advantage that, should there be any negative effects, or simply a desire to change to an alternative treatment, the Urolon treatment is not permanently retained in the body and will gradually fade away, reducing the chance of long-term complications or of unwanted interactions with alternate treatments.

How long will Urolon treatment last?

Although it varies for every person, Urolon should last for around 2 years until the bioresorption process removes it from your system.

Do I need a referral from my GP to get Urolon treatment?

Urolon can be administered in the UK without the need for a GP referral, but if you are unsure about the treatment you could initially speak to your GP regarding urine flow tests.

Is Urolon safe?

After a thorough investigation and a clinical study Urolon was approved for use in Europe, with a CE certification. No serious complications occurred during the study, and the technology of this product is already being used in aesthetic dermatology, where over 1 million patients have been treated without significant issues.

Other regulatory processes are ongoing including the US FDA (although as noted above the elements of Urolon’s carrier gel are all regarded as safe by the FDA).

Will I need a general anesthetic?

No, general anesthesia is not needed. In most cases a local anesthetic will be used, as recovery is much faster and without the complications known with general anesthetic.

Is Urolon treatment painful?

Urolon is injected into the Urethra, which will first have local anesthetic applied to minimize discomfort, as well as being a very quick 15-20 minute procedure, with the patient able to leave the clinic immediately post procedure.
