INTRODUCTION

Vaginoplasty – vaginal repair surgery

Vaginoplasty is a surgical reconstruction procedure that tightens the muscles and tissues of the vaginal canal or repairs a vaginal injury or anomaly.

Vaginoplasty is useful in cases where the muscles or tissue of a woman’s vagina have become loose, often as a result of childbirth or simply ageing; this condition is called vaginal laxity. Vaginoplasty surgery can also correct congenital defects of the vagina and acquired deformities due to cancers, tumours or trauma.

Reconstruction of the vaginal canal aims to restore strength, tone, and control to affected vaginal muscles, improve vaginal health and boost sexual sensation and confidence.

Vaginoplasty is increasingly popular with women looking to reduce pain or discomfort during intercourse and enhance their own sexual pleasure, with recent studies reporting an increase in sexual satisfaction of 60-70% following the procedure.

At the Women’s Clinic we offer surgical vaginoplasty through our Glasgow and Dublin clinics. The surgery is performed by our expert gynaecologist consultant surgeon, Dr Eliana Castenada, in our new day-surgery facility.

We offer patients the option of general or local anaesthesia and will discuss their preferences at an initial pre-op consultation with Dr Eliana. This consultation will be to establish their viability for the surgery and agree on the best approach for their needs.

Typically a vaginoplasty involves making an incision in the vaginal back wall to remove excess skin or tissue and tighten muscle, after which the vaginal wall incision is closed with sutures or skin glue and a dressing applied.

Dr Eliana sees all our patients post-op for an assessment of healing and general outcomes. We may also recommend use of a dilator to help with patient recovery.

What’s the difference between vaginoplasty and vaginal rejuvenation?

Vaginal rejuvenation (performed at The Women’s Clinic using the non-surgical CO2RE® Intima laser) uses heat to encourage and correct damaged tissue and promote self-repair through increased production of collegen and elastin.

By contrast, a Vaginoplasty is a fully surgical procedure through which the vaginal canal is reconstructed by the careful removal of excess skin and muscle tissue, resulting in a physically altered internal shape and structure.

What happens at the initial consultation?

At your initial consultation, we will explain the Vaginoplasty procedure and discuss your reasons for deciding whether or not to undergo it. Vaginoplasty is a very personal procedure, and it’s important that you are fully informed before making your choice.

Your medical history and general health are important factors in this decision and will be discussed to establish whether Vaginoplasty is right for you.

In some cases it may be that Vaginoplasty is not the appropriate procedure for your needs and we will be happy to discuss other non-surgical options with you and advise on the best approach.

If a Vaginoplasty is considered the right option for you, we will also discuss your preferences regarding anesthesia, and explain what sort of preparation you may need to undertake before surgery can take place.

Should I have a general or local anaesthetic?

The decision on which type of anaesthesia will be most suitable for you is one which will be made as part of your initial consultation. Several medical and other factors can influence the choice, and these will vary between different patients.

What is post-op recovery like?

After your Vaginoplasty procedure it is likely that you will experience a degree of pain and discomfort, as with any significant surgery.

This pain should fade over time, and can usually be controlled through standard non-prescription medications, available at chemists and other shops.

In some cases a stronger form of pain relief may be prescribed, and we will be happy to discuss this with you as part of our post-op care programme.

How soon after the procedure can I resume sexual activities?

It is important that the vaginal tissues are given time to fully heal after surgery. With this in mind, patients should refrain from vaginal intercourse and any other physical exertion such as exercise or heavy lifting. This period of rest should last forat least 3 or 4 weeks after surgery, and potentially much longer.

How long do the results of a vaginoplasty last for?

We would expect the results of a surgical Vaginoplasty procedure to last for a long period of time, offering many years of noticable improvement in vaginal health and intimate sensation.

Over time, the process of ageing (and potentially other factors, such as having more children) will mean that some laxity eventually returns to the treated area. As such, Vaginoplasty is not a permanent solution, but its positive effects will last for a long time nonetheless.

Is your Vaginoplasty procedure suitable for Male to Female ‘gender reassignment’ patients?

We are currently unable to offer any form of surgery or hormonal treatment to patients seeking MTF feminsation surgery gender transitions.
