INTRODUCTION

CO2RE Intima laser treatment for incontinence

Urinary ‘urge’ Incontinence (UI) and overactive or leaky bladder in women can be caused by low levels of the female hormone oestrogen, a common outcome of the menopause. These conditions can also be brought on by childbirth and other health issues that weaken the pelvic floor or damage nerves that control the bladder function.

Oestrogen is the hormone that maintains a healthy vaginal environment and also keeps the bladder and urethra healthy. When oestrogen levels drop during and after the menopause, this can cause pelvic muscles to weaken, reducing bladder support and your ability to hold in urine. This hypo-oestrogenic state can also bring on overactive bladder (OAB) symptoms, like frequent and strong urges to urinate.

Women experiencing UI, may also suffer burning with urination and vaginal and bladder infections linked to changes to the pH and bacterial flora in the vagina.

Other possible causes of urinary stress incontinence include:

  • hormonal changes resulting from pregnancy and childbirth
  • obesity
  • smoking
  • excessive consumption of caffeine or alcohol
  • high-impact sporting activity
  • frequent coughing or sneezing
  • the effects of aging

The CO2RE Intima laser treatment has been demonstrated to significantly restore the normal vaginal architecture and environment as if the oestrogen was still there; thereby improving many of the unpleasant consequences of low oestrogen states. Most women also report significant improvement in sexual function after the very first treatment and less leaking during intercourse and exercise.

Intima for vaginal symptoms

Intima laser treatment can provide long-term reversal of the vaginal atrophic (degenerative) changes such as thinning of the mucosa associated with discomfort, dryness, painful intercourse, sensation of burning and urinary incontinence. It has been proved to be a successful way of treating chronic vaginal pain not responding to other forms of treatment.

Intima for bladder symptoms

Intima laser treatment for incontinence aims specifically to tighten and firm the anterior vaginal wall, thus restoring support to the base of the overlying bladder and urethra, and improving the symptoms of urinary incontinence. There is also evidence showing that restoring bladder support reduces frequency of recurrent urinary tract infections.

How is the Intima treatment done?

The laser produces safe pulses of laser energy delivered via a tube shaped individual and sterile vaginal probe. These pulses generate laser beams which create microscopic channels of 0.7mm (700 microns) into the vaginal mucosa at closely spaced intervals. The process causes a mini–defect in the collagen making it shrink while stimulating new collagen and elastin to grow thus bulking and rejuvenating this layer.

Rotation of the probe at 360° allows treatment of the entire vaginal canal. This leads to an overall tightening of the lax vaginal walls including the upper part of the vagina producing added support for the base of the bladder and urethra.

The initial shrinkage and secondary regeneration also causes stretching of the internal bulbs and crura (structures) of the internal portion of the clitoris resulting in enhanced sexual sensation within the vagina.

The outcome of Intima treatment

The outcome of CO2RE laser treatment is the complete remodelling of the vaginal mucosa and the underlying collagen structure as well as the re-establishment of robust “younger-feeling” vaginal tissue enriched in thick and long collagen fibres. A clinical study showed that, at the three-month follow-up after the third treatment, 100% of women reported satisfaction with the treatment and 94% would recommend it to others. Additionally, 82% of women showed a statistically significant improvement in the vaginal health index.
